It's kinda funny that I'm reviewing an online game called Bookworm, as that particular moniker has been attached to me since childhood. I enjoy playing any type of word game, and often play several different types of online, solitary games when I'm stuck in my usual procrastinating mode.
Bookworm Deluxe (the downloadable version) is much like any other anagram game, as the basic premise involves forming words for points, while avoiding penalty tiles. Unlike most online word games, there is no timer involved, so players have some time to decide on their words. However, things get a little more hectic in the "Action" mode, where the penalty tiles rain down hot and heavy. Points are awarded for the length of the words, the use of special bonus tiles and forming a target word.
The layout is in a grid, with letters dropping down as spaces are opened by forming words, which deletes the tiles used in the words. The letters have to be touching each other. From time to time, fiery tiles appear, which will terminate the game if allowed to reach the bottom of the grid. Forming short words makes these fiery tiles appear more often, than if longer words are used. Green and gold tiles award more points, as does forming a special target word. Some strategy is involved in attaining the target words, as certain tiles have to be eliminated to bring the wanted letters together.
The music is upbeat, but not intrusive and doesn't distract from thinking about the letters. Visually, the game is pretty basic, but again, a word game is all about forming words, not about watching the scenery.
Compared to other, similar word games, Bookworm is on par with most of them. The game is designed well with a good implementation of leveling up as the game progresses. There are two main modes of play, the regular mode where things move pretty slowly and players have all the time in the world to ponder their moves, and the action mode, which is much more frenetic. Of the two modes, I prefer the action mode, which is quite exciting on the higher levels. Fans of anagram word games will be pleased.
Gameplay: 7.5
All word games are fun, if you happen to like those types of games, which I certainly do. This game is designed well, and provides good entertainment. However, there are scads of other word games out there, and while enjoyable, this particular one doesn't rise above the pack in any appreciable way.
Graphics: 7
Nice enough graphics, without anything special.
Sound: 7
Cheery, upbeat music enlivens the game experience.
Difficulty: Medium
As in most games of this type, the first levels are very easy, with subsequent levels becoming progressively more difficult.
Concept: 7
The basic concept is the same as other anagram games, with some added details such as the penalty tiles that burn the other letters around them.
Overall: 7.5
I enjoyed playing Bookworm, and it's a good way to spend those leisure minutes when the boss isn't looking. There is challenge and strategy involved, and plenty of excitement in the action mode.
